Hi, my name is Matisse (yup, just like the artist). Last name, Walkden-Brown.
WHO AM I?
I am a journalist by education. A campaigner by occupation. A storyteller by practice and personality. I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. I am a terrible cook. A climate activist. I am a kid who grew up in a backpackers resort in Fiji. And a kid who never really grew up at all. A (very) ex-model. A reader. A writer. An entrepreneur. I watch a lot of television. I make up some stories. Some of them I share.
I really believe stories are what holds us all together.
WHAT DO I DO?
I run a creative club, for other big kids who want to get playful, curious & self express. It’s called Little Mountains.
I founded a communications agency, that does things differently. We help people build better impact campaigns, while also sharpening their own communications skills. It’s called Good Form Media. We even made a super cool software to simplify all things impact strategy. It’s called Formmity.
WHY DO I DO WHAT I DO?
I’m kind of obsessed with culture. In other words, how we collectively do what we do. I’m also interested in how we can do it better. Culture is the atmosphere in which we all live. Sometimes it feels a bit like water and we are the fish. We forget to see it, although it’s all around.
It just happens that stories are the main creators of culture. So henceforth, I am also a story-obsessed-girly. I like to get into the guts and dissect the ones being told, as well as help propagate ones I think will create beautiful droplets of water, the kind of culture I want to be responsible for leaving behind. The kind that breeds joy, creativity and mutual dignity. I reckon that’s the good stuff (and so do a lot academic studies).
LINKEDIN SAYS ABOUT ME
“I am a communications professional who believes in the transformative power of storytelling.
With over a decade of experience, I have been involved in designing brands, campaigns, and programs, that drive positive change both locally and globally. My career began in TV and radio, and then to leading Greenpeace’s efforts across the Pacific Islands, before managing the communications team of a diplomatic agency. From television commercials, to economic development programs, to workshop series for budding activists, my focus is on supporting groups of people to harness their power to make the world a little better.”
SO WHAT IS THIS ODD LITTLE BLOG?
Thank you for asking. I know, I sound so buttoned up above don’t I? Like I am casually strolling around UN offices with a thesaurus under my arm (I am not). But then here I am writing stories about bikinis, nipples, grief and lumpy lipstick! I know, it’s very confusing I understand. Yet another wild multifaceted human ride.
So I have written about what this blog is, here. Please read it (and my blog). And don’t give up on me.
